Why You should Steer Clear of Lavender Topiaries

TOPIARIES

I’m sure we have all seen the beautiful colour pictures of a lavender topiaries tree within the brochures of some of the top high street stores, however there is a reason why we don’t supply these at Lavenderworld, actually there are several reasons.

We appreciate that the topiaries look pretty, they are different and can look attractive outside our front door, however, if you purchase these, do so with caution, trepidation and frankly don’t hold out much hope for their survival.

We promise we aren’t just dismissing these new kids on the block, but when something doesn’t work, it doesn’t work.

The reasons why the topiaries aren’t sustainable is due to the fact that they are created with the notoriously difficult French Lavender variates, now if you fancy lugging your topiaries into your greenhouse as soon as the weather starts to change, this may save them, however the odds are still quite slim as the French variates don’t tend to cope with our cold and blistery English winters.

Another problem is drainage, I’m sure we all know how much lavender adores good drainage and with topiaries, lavender simply doesn’t have the option of decent drainage, which in turn results in your lavender plants looking a little sorry for themselves.

So, how can you avoid these pitfalls? Why not try a dwarf lavender such as ‘Little Lady’ in window boxes, this has a wonderful, welcoming effect. Alternatively, why not get some stunning pots and pop either the Hidcote lavender variety or Grosso Lavender variety, which are both hardy. English lavender plants that will not only look stunning but will stand the test of time!
